Samoborska kremšnita (Samobor custard slice) – Intangible Cultural Heritage
Our most popular dessert, Samoborska kremšnita- Samobor custard slice, is now legally protected as an autochthonous Samobor or Croatian brand.
According to the decision of the Ministry of Culture and Media, the traditional dessert has received the status of an intangible cultural property and will be entered in the Register of Protected Cultural Property of the Republic of Croatia.
As stated in the explanation of the Ministry, this dessert made of puff pastry and whipped egg cream is known by various names and variants in Central and Mediterranean countries, and one of the most famous in Croatia is Samobor.
The original recipe was created in the 1920s by confectioner Đuro Lukačić, who prepared them until 1966, after which he helped make them. Two confectioners, Višnja Vukmanović and Branka Žganjer, transferred the original recipe and knowledge to Kavana Livadić and the pastry shop U prolazu, which are also holders of intangible cultural property. The tradition of making Samobor custard slice is cherished in these patisseries even today, so that this foamy dessert is enjoyed by many visitors, guests, tourists, excursionists and mountaineers…
The Gueen of all cakes, that’s how she is beaten in Samobor. One of the symbols and the first association with Samobor in Croatia and abroad. It is a dessert that makes everyone always happy to come and it is almost unthinkable for someone to visit Samobor and not try a nice light yellowish cream between the crispy puff pastry. Because of her, waiting is fine. It is brought home as a souvenir from Samobor, even if it has cooled down on the way. There are several recipes for this cake, but Samobor custard slice is unique because of its preparation, but the Samobor ambience that should be enjoyed.
