Museums, Galleries and Collections
Zagreb County is proud of its series of museums, galleries and other areas which serve as the cradle for various artistic exhibitions and events of the eminent representatives of Croatian and foreign art. Galleries and museums provide a cultural and historical overview of life in these areas. Natural science, geology, archaeology, ethnography and cultural and historical collections can be viewed in the Turopolje Museum and the Samobor Museum. Visit the crafts exhibited in Jastrebarsko. A rare treasure of Zagreb County is the Andautonia Archaeological Park, while the magical world of the naive painter Matija Skurjeni Museum in the Novi Dvori Jelačićevi (Curia Nova) in Zaprešić and the Marton Museum – the first private museum in Croatia with a valuable collection of items from the 18th and 19th centuries – are well worth a visit. Also within Zagreb County is the Donja Kupčina Heritage Museum, while the Brdovec Museum also has a permanent heritage exhibition.
Visit the private collections, including Krešimir Fotović’s collection of textile folk handicrafts as well as Božidar Ćuk’ Hiža Mrzljak. Also worthy of note is the ethno collection at Gorica Svetojanska and the one in the Bazilian Nunnery at Sošice. Of great significance is the Memorial Room of the Blessed Alojzije Stepinac. Discover the sculptures in the Gallery of the Jakovlje castle, which is in fact a park of sculptures in the castle’s gardens; here sculpture colonies are organized each summer. We recommend that you also stop by the Prica Gallery, Ostojić Atelier or the Lang Photo-Gallery. Wherever you decide to go, we are confident that you will find much to attract your attention giving you a reason to return to Zagreb County.
